So far, our new season has been all about Richard E. Grant. Who could have predicted that!? I have, in the past found him to be quite annoying, but in the wake of my recent conversion to Withnail & I, it seemed like it might be time to revisit How to Get Ahead in Advertising. It turned out to be another crowd-pleaser (nice to have you back, crowd!) and it played better than the way I remembered it. Personally, I think it’s the MovieNight effect…

In the spirit of atonement for past omissions, and in celebration of the continuation of MovieNight, we finally showed Withnail & I this week. This [now cult] film is hysterically funny, and deeply nuanced, but one mostly comes away marveling at the just-plain-hysterical Richard E. Grant’s Withnail. How could one man be so angry? How could his eyes look like that?
Thanks to the lovely crowd of MovieNighters who filled our sofas once again. Nice to be back. Aaaah.

Just before the beginning of our new season (the duration of which remains to be determined), we set up a screen on the roof, threw down a carpet and some cushions, and after about twenty more trips up the stairs, we had a pretty good-looking setup. The night was pretty perfect, albeit a wee bit chilly. One of our guests ultimately chose to leave, even though we loaned her a blanket… thin blood?
Soylent Green was a real treat, though. I love looking at how the future has been imagined from the past… what did they get right and wrong? This was our second roof-top screening, and the second to feature Charlton Heston in the lead role. Therefore, it is true to say, that we only show Charlton Heston movies on the roof.

Of course, the “high note” we refer to above was one of many from the falsetto’d voices of the BeeGees!
Our finalé, which was either seasonal or ultimate… that remains to be seen, brought in a lovely crowd of merrymakers, and the film delivered! Thanks again to Norris for his suggestion of a musical themed feature. That moves him up another notch on the Successful Suggesters page, but with the future of MovieNight in doubt, he may remain in the number 3 position. Let’s hope he gets a chance to better that placement.
In any case, MovieNight will remain a bright spot in my life, and I hope we have brought joy to many of you. Stay tuned!

Having realized that this will probably be the last season of MovieNight, we decided it would be good to squeeze one more feature in before our finale. George Washington proved to be a nice choice, and sooo MovieNight! What’s next?

Our three-part Nicolas Roeg mini-season came to a shuddering end with Don’t Look Now. As many times as I’ve seen this, I am still unable to heed the title’s warning… I looked again, felt a rush of terror again, and gasped in shock. Again.
Also… what a beautiful DVD transfer! Stunning.
