Sexy Beast – Sexy Crowd!

sexybeast_640x360

I’m a huge fan of Jonathan Glazer… his style and pace appeal to me. Following last week’s wildly successful undisclosed screening of Get Carter, it seemed only natural to keep the British Gangster thing going for another week with Sexy Beast. Apparently you agreed (or perhaps the film’s name was simply too hard to resist?), as we had peeps on the “emergency cushions” on the floor. Glazer also has penchant for great sound design (particularly evident in Birth), and while the heart of our MovieNight sound system was back in the repair shop (again!), I think we managed to present pretty well with the vintage 1970’s Marantz and Technics stand-ins that we keep in the back room for just such an emergency. The musical score haunts me still.

Ben Kingsley’s character was absolutely terrifying… I’ve met psychopaths like that, and managed to play the happy-go-lucky dufus convincingly enough to survive. Yikes.

Anyway… one more to go before we close our doors for the summer (rooftop extras, not withstanding). It will be a musical extravaganza… for sure.

The Door in the Floor. Hard Cellar.

This was another excellent movie that I’ve been wanting to screen for a number of years, but the MovieNight-specific  problems with The Door in the Floor are numerous: marital breakdown, tragic death of children, mainstream Hollywood actors, god-awful trailer, Roger Ebert loved it, etc.

Thanks to the four of you who turned up (and also the two who dropped in just for a drink). OK. I get it. Fair enough. You want something different. You want fun. Next week.

BTW (Confession alert!), I’m not sure how many of you were aware of the great scam I successfully perpetrated around the wonderful The Cranes are Flying after a lousy turn-out at the first screening.  I sent out an apology to all those that had to be turned away due to over-attendance, and promised to show it again soon. I did. The next screening was completely packed. Sometimes a little lie is a good thing. Not one person who came for the second screening was disappointed. On the contrary.

Am I a bad per(h)son?

The President’s Analyst. MovieNight at its insane best.

Norris has been pushing me to show The President’s Analyst for about eight years now… tonight was the night, and boy, did you love it! James Coburn was smiley and trippy… his girlfriend was dippy and hippy.  This was a gem. Thanks to all who came… sorry I couldn’t make the drinks fast enough! But then again, I guess when you have fancy stuff on the menu, it’s ok to take the time to make it right.

Anywhich, as Flea would say, it was an amazing night, and it made yours truly very happy to have made so many of you truly happy. Just sayin’

Thanks to Chris and Circe for your unwavering support. x

Red Road. I’ll see you, Jimmy!

Life in Glasgow can be pretty harsh. “I’ll see you, Jimmy!” is something you don’t want to hear being directed at you, since it is usually followed by excruciating pain, typically caused by the impact of the speaker’s forehead across the bridge of your nose. This move is often referred to as a “Glasgow Kiss”. Yet, in Andrea Arnold’s debut feature, Red Road, which packed the house on this lovely, springy first day of May, there is evidence of tenderness as well. The sex scene is, how shall I put it… quite memorable.

We first showed Red Road in 2006, before it was released in this country… had to sit on the floor that night. It’s hard to believe that eight years have passed. Sill here!
