Klute. Moot?

Our Friday MovieNight thriller sure scared everyone! Or was it something I said?

Seriously, though… I must say that I was rather surprised by the poor turnout for this excellent thriller. Every other Friday MovieNight has been packed. Was it Columbus Day weekend. Hmmm. Anyway, as usual, those of us who were here had a smashing time!

The Great Beauty. MovieNight returns!

You know… I really wanted to start off the new season without subtitles. Why? Good question. I guess because I worry about being somehow too fancy, and making my patrons work too hard. If I had a shrink, I’m sure that would be a great subject to waste 45 minutes on, but since I don’t, let’s just say this: I’m not going to think like that any more (I hope). The Great Beauty was a great opener, and a visual feast, seasoned with laughs and Felini-esque moments of surrealism.

It was so good to see so many of you once again, and once I got back into the rhythm, the drinks started materializing more promptly. I do regret one thing, though… I had a new batch of ‘teen Acres Curried Chutney and blue cheese that I forgot to bring out until you were all gone. Opening night jitters? Remind me next time, would ya? Something like, “Psst. Richard… any chutney tonight?”

Velvet Goldmine. A plush ending.

Another season came to an end, musically and glamorously. Thanks to all who came out. Congratulations to Sophie for scooping the grand prize! She even had the audacity to be in the ladies room as her ticket was drawn. Some folks are just plain lucky!

Speaking of which… let’s hope we’re lucky enough to return in September for Season 12!

Sexy Beast – Sexy Crowd!

sexybeast_640x360

I’m a huge fan of Jonathan Glazer… his style and pace appeal to me. Following last week’s wildly successful undisclosed screening of Get Carter, it seemed only natural to keep the British Gangster thing going for another week with Sexy Beast. Apparently you agreed (or perhaps the film’s name was simply too hard to resist?), as we had peeps on the “emergency cushions” on the floor. Glazer also has penchant for great sound design (particularly evident in Birth), and while the heart of our MovieNight sound system was back in the repair shop (again!), I think we managed to present pretty well with the vintage 1970’s Marantz and Technics stand-ins that we keep in the back room for just such an emergency. The musical score haunts me still.

Ben Kingsley’s character was absolutely terrifying… I’ve met psychopaths like that, and managed to play the happy-go-lucky dufus convincingly enough to survive. Yikes.

Anyway… one more to go before we close our doors for the summer (rooftop extras, not withstanding). It will be a musical extravaganza… for sure.

The President’s Analyst. MovieNight at its insane best.

Norris has been pushing me to show The President’s Analyst for about eight years now… tonight was the night, and boy, did you love it! James Coburn was smiley and trippy… his girlfriend was dippy and hippy.  This was a gem. Thanks to all who came… sorry I couldn’t make the drinks fast enough! But then again, I guess when you have fancy stuff on the menu, it’s ok to take the time to make it right.

Anywhich, as Flea would say, it was an amazing night, and it made yours truly very happy to have made so many of you truly happy. Just sayin’

Thanks to Chris and Circe for your unwavering support. x
